11/21/06-Canada's in Sask

Dan and I hunted about 5 mi. w of Yankee point; lots of geese using the field the night before, all geese were going west and heading to or by this field.

Flight pattern totally changed in the morning, geese flew primarily 1.5-2 mi north of us. Some did come closer and we managed to attract enough to bag 4 apiece.

11/13/06 Canadas in Canada

Dan and I hunted just north of the Noonan port; lots of giant Canadas on Boundary Dam, the most I've seen.

Majority of birds headed just across the line to NoDak, but we attracted singles, pairs, and small groups and each of us had bagged 8 by 11AM.

11/04/06-pheasants, 0.5 west Brady Slough

Tracks, but none real fresh. Dog did find a partridge covey in the railroad ditch, shot one at long range. Did not see many pheasants, but bagged 2 roosters.

11/03/06-pheasants, 1.5 s. L. Anderson

Hunted wetlands, unbelievable number of tracks, but saw only about 20 birds, and just 2 roosters. bagged both, pup did great without using collar.

11/2/06-pheasants, 1 mi w golf course

Lots of birds, but a bit jumpy, several roosters sat tight in the bushes but were tough to get clean looks at for shots, shot 2, had caught a wounded rooster earlier in the day. Also bagged 1 grouse

eston 10/4/06

Best decoying day of the three; overcast and breezy. Birds decoyed well for the first hour, including wf's and snows. I bagged 2 wf's (gave landowner one the previous day), and 5 snows. Our group got our wf's (only 6 each possession allowed this year), as well as several other birds. 70+ total for the six of us at last count.

Headed back for ND in the afternoon.

Eston 10/3/06

Clear, cold, and dead calm for our second day; frosty decoys, not good for decoying, I shot 2 wf's, then left to walk for partridge about 1/2 mile from the decoys in an abandoned farmstead and wetland. Found 2 large coveys, and chased them around the trees, finally bagging 5.

My take for the day, 2 wf's, 5 partridge.

Eston 10/2/2006

Lots of snow geese here, very unusual for this far west, much more water in the wetland near Eric's than in 1998, and lots of birds. We set up just east of it, weather not great for hunting waterfowl, so decoying success was limited, but plenty of pass shooting over the decoys anyway.

All six of us bagged 3 whitefronts, along with a variety of other birds including snows, ross's, canada's, and sh crane.

3 wf's and 1 snow for me.

Pheasants/West Nordstag's

Had just a couple hours to hunt as Drew was leaving for Brandon, Manitoba after lunch (Dec 21). Hunted west Nordstag's, hundreds of birds, most headed into CRP wild, but we didn't have time to follow. Hunted a couple tree rows and a grass waterway and managed four rooster (3 me, 1 Drew).

Pheasants/East Nordstags

Drew and I hunted Nordstags south of the shop, birds tended to be a bit wild, but we got 5 to sit and ended up just one short (Drew 3, me 2). Walked west tree row into the sun first, lots of birds, and quite a few stayed fairly tight, but we could not pick out roosters looking into the sun. Could have had all 6 right there with good light conditions.

Snow Geese

Snow and strong northwest winds predicted for today, and the forecast was right. With the prediction of subzero temps tomorrow morning looks like this could be the end. 100,000 geese at Carlson and 200,000 at Lukach. We set up in O. Lien's just west of Lukach, had near 100,000 snows in it the last night.

Large flocks of snows came, but their destination was a stubble field next to the pea field we were in; they were extremely low into the wind but were on a flight path just outside our decoys. We got some shots in the decoys early but had to move outside as the morning went on. Also shot several with the wind returning to water.

Monte-18 snows Me-13 snows, 2 mallard drakes.
